The Day I was on the Receiving End

The lunch buffet was $26.99!  I told my husband, who had a coupon for a free buffet, to go ahead and eat.  He said he would be okay and started to walk away.  Well, I knew he was hungry so I spoke a little louder (he doesn’t hear as well anymore).  “No, you go ahead and eat.  It’s okay.  I’m not paying $27 for a buffet when I’ll just eat a little of it.  I’ll be out here [in the casino] – just call me when you’re done.”  He said okay and as I turned to walk away a woman ran up to me and said, “I have an extra ticket, I’ll buy your lunch.”  I tried to explain that I was really okay not eating but she insisted.  What she didn’t know is that I had bariatric surgery a few years ago and I can only eat small amounts of food at a time.  It wasn’t that I didn’t have the money to pay the price of the buffet it was that I wasn’t willing to pay that much when I knew that I would eat less than a child would eat.  She was determined that I would have a meal and that she would buy it.  For her, that was “end of story!”  I wondered if she thought I had lost all my money playing the slots…but if that was the case then she was really being kind to buy my meal!  We ended up being seated at the table next to her.  We tried to tell her again how generous we thought she was but you could tell that she was uncomfortable accepting the thanks.  She just wanted to do something nice and go on about her day…  Her act of kindness brought tears to my eyes and I knew that I had to share it with all of you.   #morethanthecoffee
